Whitney Elizabeth Houston was conceived into a musical family, 9 August 1993, in Newark New Jersey. Whitney is the daughter and cousin of the singer Dionne. At the age of a small girl, Houston started singing professionally with her church's choir. She was a backing vocalist for Chaka Khosn's song from 1978 Im Every Woman with her mom. Then, she performed background vocals for Jermaine Jackson and Lou Rawls as well as her mom. The singer was first a featured singer for The New York-based New York Funk band Material.
